A Night of Legacy, Lineage, and Aloha: A Reflection on 2026 Hōʻike

Hālau Anuhea i ka Pōli ʻo Kawahine recently presented a powerful and heartfelt hōʻike that beautifully embodied the depth, discipline, and cultural integrity of hula. The evening was more than a performance—it was a living expression of genealogy, ʻike, and aloha passed down through generations.

The program opened with a captivating kahiko segment that invited the audience on a sacred huakaʻi through the legendary lineage of Tūtū Pele and her ʻohana. Each papa (class) entered the stage with purpose and presence, oli echoing the voices of Pele’s dynasty. Through ʻolapa hula, the haumāna brought to life stories of Pele and her beloved younger sister, Hiʻiakaikapoliopele—sharing their journeys, relationships, and enduring legacy. The kahiko portion set a powerful tone, grounding the evening in tradition, protocol, and ancestral connection.

Transitioning into the ʻauana segment, the hōʻike shifted into a deeply personal and genealogical tribute. This portion honored Kumu Kawahine’s moʻokūʻauhau, beginning with her own ʻohana. A special hula dedicated to her grandmother reflected the deep roots of family and the foundation from which her journey began.

From there, the program unfolded as a living lineage of hula, honoring each kumu hula who shaped her path. Every mele and choreography carried intention, representing the knowledge, style, and spirit passed down through her teachers.

The hōʻike then highlighted the continuation of this lineage through the next generation. The hālau shared how the practice of choreography is cultivated within their alakaʻi. These emerging leaders presented hula they had choreographed themselves, demonstrating not only technical skill but a deep understanding of storytelling, responsibility, and cultural stewardship. This moment reflected the true purpose of hula education—not just to learn, but to carry forward and perpetuate the ʻike with integrity.

Together, these segments wove a powerful narrative of origin, growth, and continuation—honoring the past while preparing the future.

For those who were unable to attend, or for ʻohana and friends who wish to relive this special evening, a full recording of the hōʻike is available on the hālau’s YouTube channel. This offering allows the stories, ʻike, and aloha shared on stage to continue reaching hearts beyond that night.

This hōʻike would not have been possible without the generous support of the community. Hālau Anuhea i ka Pōli ʻo Kawahine extends its deepest mahalo to the following sponsors and donors for their contributions and belief in the mission of perpetuating Hawaiian culture through hula:

Their generosity helped bring this vision to life and ensured a meaningful experience for all who attended. Huge MAHALO to all our donors!

Though the hōʻike has ended, its spirit continues to live on—in the hearts of the haumāna, within the ʻike that has been passed down, and in the kuleana each dancer now carries forward. This was not simply a night of performance, but a reaffirmation of purpose: to honor lineage, to remain grounded in tradition, and to move forward with intention and aloha.

In hula, nothing is ever truly finished. Each step taken, each mele shared, and each story told becomes part of a greater continuum. As this chapter closes, a new one begins—guided by the ʻike of the kūpuna, the teachings of the kumu, and the commitment of the next generation to perpetuate what has been entrusted to them.

ʻAʻohe pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi.

All knowledge is not taught in one school.

And so, the journey continues. 🌺
